The fatigue resistance of friction-bolted joints is compared to that of riveted joints. The effects of thread design, preload and bolt-tightening, and mean stress on the fatigue resistance of threaded fasteners in tension, bolts and rivets in bearing and shear, cold-driven rivets in sheet, hot-driven riveted joints in structural plate, field repair and rehabilitation of riveted structures, and pin-joints are discussed. A bibliography of stress intensity factor solutions for crack growth from holes, axially loaded round bars, bending in round bars, and fasteners is presented.
